Highlights:

Malcolm X – The 22nd installment of the Black Heritage series honors Malcolm X (1925-1965), the leader of a movement to unite black people throughout the world.  A follower of Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Nation of Islam, he adopted the name “X” as a symbol of his stolen identity.

Victorian Love – 33¢ and 55¢:  The 33-cent and 55-cent Love stamps are the first-ever cut-to-shape U.S. stamps.  Based on Victorian artifacts, their floral-heart designs are patterned after a Valentine’s card decorated by an unknown German artist in 1895.

Irish Immigration – Religious persecution, extreme poverty, crop failure, and overcrowding forced nearly 3.5-million Irish people to abandon their homeland and seek prosperity in America between 1820 and 1880.  This United States-Ireland joint-issue commemorates the influence of Irish immigration on our nation.

Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne – 33¢:  World-famous husband and wife acting team Alfred Lunt (1892-1977) and Lynn Fontanne (1887-1983) performed together in over two-dozen Broadway shows.  Unlike most commemoratives, this stamp was released only in New York City and through selected philatelic outlets.

Daffy Duck – Daffy Duck has appeared in more than 120 cartoons, often co-starring with Porky Pig and Bugs Bunny.  This stamp joins Bugs Bunny and Sylvester and Tweety as the third stamp in the continuing Warner Bros. series.

Tropical Flowers – 33¢:  Issued in a new format described by the U.S. Postal Service as a “convertible booklet,” the Tropical Flowers stamps have 12 stamps on the back side of the release liner paper and eight stamps on the front.  Created as a single piece of art, the four stamps form a continuous design.

Xtreme Sports – The 1999 “Xtreme Sports” stamps contain hidden text detectable with a special decoder.

James Cagney – 33¢:  The fourth subject honored in the Legends of Hollywood series, James Cagney built his legend acting in such Hollywood classics as The Public Enemy, Angels With Dirty Faces, Each Dawn I Die, The Roaring Twenties, and Yankee Doodle Dandy.
