Highlights Include:
World Columbian Expo – Featuring a portion of the scarce 15¢ Pictorial design of 1869, this stamp was issued to promote the stamp event of the year – the 1992 World Columbian Stamp Expo. The original design for the 1869 stamp was taken from John Vanderlyn’s painting “The Landing of Columbus,” which hangs in the rotunda of the Capitol.
W.E.B. Du Bois – A noted writer, historian, and educator, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois joined other distinguished African Americans as part of the Black Heritage series. A leader in the early movement for equality for African Americans, he founded the Niagara Movement in 1905. This organization later evolved into the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
First Voyage of Columbus – As part of a joint issue with Italy, the U.S. issued a block of four stamps commemorating Columbus’ first voyage in 1492. The various scenes show Columbus seeking financial backing from Queen Isabella, his three ships crossing the Atlantic, his crew sighting land, and a small party coming ashore in the New World.
U.S./U.S.S.R. Joint Space Issue – This dramatic space se-tenant was a joint issue with our former space race rivals, the Soviet Union. The design, which was a collaboration between U.S. and Soviet artists, presented a broad spectrum of space exploration. Significant achievements of the last 25 years let us take a look at the past and present of space ventures, as well as a glimpse into the future.
Dorothy Parker – A short-story writer and poet, Dorothy Parker became the 10th addition to the Literary Arts Series. As a staff writer for The New Yorker, her short stories were so popular that her later books and poetry became instant best sellers.
Lunar New Year – For the first time ever, the Postal Service issued a special stamp for the New Year. Printed in a new and experimental format; panes of 20 that are four stamps wide and five stamps deep, the stamp pictures a stylized rooster, referring to the Chinese year that began on January 23, 1993.
Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo – On June 27, 1542, Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo set sail from New Spain (present-day Mexico) in search of a water route between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Three months later, he landed at present-day San Diego. Since no portraits exist of this famous conquistador, this stamp is based on an artist’s conception.
