Stamp Set Highlights:

Stamp Collecting – This booklet pane of four was issued to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the American Philatelic Society.  This was the first time that U.S. commemoratives were ever issued in booklet form.  It is also interesting to note that the last stamp in the pane illustrates the 1986 Presidents Miniature Sheets.  This was the first time that a U.S. stamp pictured another U.S. stamp that had not yet been issued.

Sojourner Truth – Born into slavery, Isabella (as she was named) finally acquired her freedom and moved to New York City, where she found it nearly impossible to earn a living.  In 1843, she changed her name to Sojourner Truth and began traveling, lecturing, and educating former slaves.  She was considered one of the greatest orators of her time.

Duke Ellington – This stamp honors popular jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader Duke Ellington.  Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington wrote more than 6,000 songs during his long career, including “Satin Doll” and “Sophisticated Lady.”  Some consider Ellington the greatest composer American society has ever produced.

Statue of Liberty – The day after the newly renovated Statue of Liberty was unveiled, this stamp was issued in New York.  The French issued a similar stamp in Paris.  Both issues commemorate the 100th anniversary of France’s gift to the United States – the Statue of Liberty.
