Stamp Highlights:

Project Mercury (#1193)– This stamp was printed and distributed to 305 Post Offices in sealed pouches, long before John Glenn left on his historic flight, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth.  On his safe return, February 20, 1962, at 3:30 p.m., Postal Headquarters ordered the pouches be opened. Within 1 1⁄2 hours, many offices sold out their entire stock!

Seattle World’s Fair (#1196) – Publicizes the opening of the Seattle World’s Fair, “Century 21,” and features the 550-foot tall rotating space needle and the monorail that took visitors from Seattle to the fair site in ninety-six seconds.

Sam Rayburn (#1202) – Honors lawyer Sam Rayburn, who served as Speaker of the House longer than any other person.

Dag Hammarskjold (#1203 and 1204) – When postal authorities discovered that some of the Dag Hammarskjold sheets had been printed with inverted designs, the decision was made to continue printing the error and issue both versions.  Later, a court decision ruled this act was illegal.

Christmas (#1205) – A wreath and burning candles were chosen as a non-sectarian, non-religious design for this first U.S. stamp honoring Christmas.

Winslow Homer (#1207) – In honor of the American realist painter and illustrator, this issue shows his oil, “Breezing Up,” which hangs in the National Gallery, Washington, D.C.
