Washington and Lee University (#982) – Originally founded in 1749, as Augusta Academy, Washington and Lee University has expanded into a School of Law, School of Commerce and Administration, and School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Puerto Rico Election (#983) – This stamp was issued to commemorate the election of Luis Munoz Marin as the first governor of Puerto Rico, in 1948.

Grand Army of the Republic (#985) – Issued to commemorate the final national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization made up of Union Army veterans.

National Capital Sesquicentennial (#990-992) – This series of three stamps was issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the National Capital, Washington, D.C.

Statue of Freedom (#988) – On December 12, 1863, the Statue of Freedom was placed on top of the dome of the Capitol Building.  It stands 19 feet six inches high and weighs about 15,000 pounds.

Railroad Engineers of America (#993) – Honors the railroad engineers of America and portrays John Luther (Casey) Jones, who was killed in a train wreck near Vaughn, Mississippi.

Kansas City, Missouri Centenary (#994) – Located on the site of the first permanent settlement, the Town of Kansas was given a charter in 1850.  Three years later, the community was incorporated and renamed Kansas City.

Boy Scouts (#995) – This stamp was issued in honor of the Boy Scouts of America, on the occasion of the second National Jamboree at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

California Statehood (#997) – Discovered by the Spanish, California was ceded to the United States in 1848.  Two years later, California became the 31st state to join the Union.
