700+ mint and used Bolivia stamps, 1867-1993. On homemade album pages.
The stamps in this 50-page collection constitute over a third of all stamps issued by Bolivia. Virtually every year since the beginning of the country’s postal service is represented up to 1993, with heaviest concentration in the first 90 years (1868-late 1950s). Includes nearly two-thirds of all airmails plus complete postage dues. The collection is in great condition, consisting of both mint and used stamps, heavier on the mint side. Many complete and nearly complete sets.
A few highlights that caught my eye:
1867-69 issues – nine stamps of the first ten issued by Bolivia. The Andean condor, Bolivia’s national bird, and a cultural and spiritual symbol of the country, appears on all.
1925 commemoratives – complete mint-fresh set of 10 stamps celebrate the Republic of Bolivia’s 100 years of independence from Spain. Really stunning.
1960 stamp set of 19 – the complete golden set shows pre-Columbian carvings found on Bolivia’s Gate of the Sun, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Printed in Germany in 1926(!) to celebrate Bolivia’s independence. Sold in Europe without permission, it remained locked in a bank vault until 1960. High inflation in Bolivia meant when the stamps were finally released, they were overprinted with huge surcharges. Real stamp history! Scott Catalogue values them at over $116; notes seven values were meant for airmail, though none were overprinted “Aereo”.
