The first US War Savings stamp was issued Decebmer 1, 1917, with a goal to raise funds for World War I. They were produced by the Treasury Department and distributed in many convenient loactions (banks, post offices, etc.). The stamps were available in 25¢ and $5 denominations. The $5 War Savings stamp cost $4.12 when issued and earned 4% interest, or a penny a month. When they matured five years (1923) later they could be redeemed for $5.
