International Museum Day
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) founded International Museum Day in 1946. Â The organization was created to promote the educational role of museums and the international circulation of cultural items.
Additionally, ICOM declared that International Museum Day would spread the message that âMuseums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.â
Over the years, International Museum Day gained popularity, being celebrated at an increasing number of museums. Â In 1992, International Museum Day incorporated a theme for the first time â âMuseums and the Environment.â Â Every year since has also included a theme, such as âPeace and Harmony,â âBridging Cultures,â âTourism,â âCultural Landscapes,â and âCollecting Today for Tomorrow.â
