# UNV68-69 - 1987 Shelter for the Homeless
The United Nations General Assembly declared 1987 to be the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless. The International Year highlighted the plight of the millions of people with no home - the pavement dwellers, those who sleep in doorways, subways and public buildings, and those made homeless by natural and man-made destruction. The year also highlighted the plight of hundreds of millions who lack a home which provides protection from the elements, has access to safe water and sanitation, and is within easy reach of centers for employment, education, and health care.
