All of the Indigenous People stamps have been painted by Pennsylvania artist Stephen Bennett. Bennett travels the world in search of indigenous people to paint – with a goal of completing an international exhibit of 1,000 portraits. He has said he hopes his portraits “reveal that every person of every race and culture is interconnected, indispensable and radiant with astonishing beauty.” Bennett’s paintings feature great detail, in part due to their grand scale. Most of his paintings measure 80 inches by 64 inches. In addition to his paintings, Bennett teaches portrait workshops to help the people of the world take pride in their culture.
The Vienna stamps picture: Daniel the Adventurer, painted in Easter Island, Chile in 2000; Penan Girl from Bario, painted in Sarawak, Malaysia in 2006; Golden Amber Lhasa Lady, painted in China in 2012; Forbidden City Princess, painted in China in 2012; White Paint, painted in Tanzania in 2003; and Grandma Apple Cheeks, painted in Mongolia in 2012.
