# UNV505-06 - 2011 United Nations Intl. Year of Forest
International Year of Forests
One third of the world’s land surface is covered with trees. The United Nations declared 2011 The International Year of Forests to point out the importance of trees and forests in the lives of humans. The U.N. issued a set of stamps to “help raise further awareness of how evolving human needs and our planet’s health are deeply intertwined with the present and future well being of forests.” The theme for the year was “Forests for People” – showcasing positive stories of people overcoming challenges and taking action for forests around the globe.
