The Aachen Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in Northern Europe. It was built by Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, between 792 and 805 A.D. Charlemagne collected holy relics and many are stored in the Aachen Cathedral, including the cloak of the Blessed Virgin, the swaddling clothes of the infant Jesus, the loincloth worn by Christ on the Cross, and the beheading cloth of St. John the Baptist.
