# UNV438-41 - 2009 UN Vienna Endangered Species
The United Nations issued its seventeenth set of the United Nations Endangered Species series featuring 12 species of insects. The Vienna stamps illustrate the Raja Brooke’s birdwing (butterfly, Trogonoptera brookiana), Emperor scorpion (Pandinus imperator), Blue ground beetle (Carabus intricatus), and Mexican redknee tarantula (Brachypelma smithi).
The Endangered Species stamps call attention to species on the verge of extinction. Each year a new species group has been featured since the program began in 1993. This was the first U.N. set designed by natural artist Roger Kent of Great Britain.
