Japan is among the U.N. nations that have agreed to identify, protect, and preserve important natural and cultural sites that are recognized to be of exceptional interest and universal value. This is the purpose of the World Heritage Convention, adopted by UNESCO in 1972. Six sites in Japan are featured on these stamps.
Himeji-jo, on the S7 stamp, is the finest surviving example of sixteenth-century Japanese castle architecture. The Nikko shrines and temples of the S 15 issue reflect the harmonious integration of the religious structures into the forest surroundings.
