The General Assembly selected 1994 as the International Year of the family to celebrate and show support for society’s basic social unit. It is the unit that nurtures and sustains humanity. The Family emblem, found top center on each stamp, is a heart, sheltered by a roof, linked to another heart. It is designed not only to show the warmth, security, and continuity found in a family but also to indicate the complexity of families and the uncertainties of life. The designer is Swiss-born Catherine Littasy-Rollier.
The s5.50 stamp symbolizes national, regional, and international action on behalf of families, while the s8 finishes up with the theme of partnership in domestic responsibilities.
