Earth Summit took place in Rio de Janeiro in June, 1992, and focused on the “greenhouse effect.” Braldt Bralds of the Netherlands, creator of Survival of the Forests (1988) and Clean Oceans (1992), illustrates the “greenhouse effect” on these se-tenant stamps.

Vienna’s s7 stamps illustrate environmental damage from natural sources as well as from man-made sources. The volcano represents nature’s polluters while industrial smokestacks and nuclear towers symbolize man-made polluters – all turning living forests into deserts. A bluebird, symbol of happiness, flees the center. A mother monkey and child crowd into a shrinking forest. An owl, symbol of wisdom, wants to fly from the tree stump – but there is no place to go.
