1993 Endangered Species
UN Offices in Vienna
UN Offices in Vienna
These stamps began a multi-year series to focus attention on the dire plight of many of Earth’s species. New York, Geneva, and Vienna will each feature four different species per year. Many fauna and flora are threatened by the destruction of habitats from population growth and environmental pollution or by unrestricted exploitation. A Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species was drafted in 1973 and became international law in 1975. The U.N. monitors the provisions of the Convention that prohibits or regulates trade in endangered species.
Vienna’s assortment completes this year’s series with Grevy’s zebra, Antarctica’s Humboldt penguin, the desert monitor, and the grey wolf. American artist Steve Brennan was the Vienna illustrator.
