# UNG93-94 - 1980 United Nations 35th Anniversary
These issues commemorated the 35th anniversary of the signing of the U.N. Charter. Some of the important dates in the United Nations’ first 35 years are: 1949 – the Netherlands granted independence to Indonesia as a result of U.N. efforts; 1953 – North Korea and the U.N. signed a truce; 1964 – the Security Council approved a peace-keeping force for Cyprus; and 1965 – UNICEF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The U.N. has been successful in both peace-keeping and humanitarian efforts.
