2013 World Oceans Day
Geneva Office

The 2013 United Nations World Oceans Day stamps were issued for the Geneva United Nations office. The stamps picture illustrations from Dr. Seuss’ book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

World Oceans Day was first proposed in 1992 by the government of Canada. It was unofficially celebrated annually thereafter. In 2002, The Ocean Project and The World Ocean Network began to widely promote the day, but it was not until 2008 that it was properly established by the U.N. It is now officially celebrated every year on June 8th. The formal recognition of a World Oceans Day provides support and exposure for preexisting ocean conservation groups.

World Oceans Day provides organizations like The Ocean Project and The World Ocean Network a designated day dedicated to reinforcing the importance of oceanic conservation and protection. Both organizations partner with zoos, aquariums, and museums around the globe to facilitate ocean education, awareness, and action. This starts at the local level, and is aimed at increasing global conservation efforts.
