Offices in Geneva
The 2012 United Nations World Heritage stamps pay tribute to some of Africa’s finest sites.
Virunga National Park, located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, became a World Heritage Site in 1979. It had a diverse range of habitats including swamps, steppes, savannas, lava plains, lowlands, forests, high-altitude glaciers, and mountain peaks.
Featured on the other Geneva stamp is the Amphitheatre of El Jem in Tunisia. It is considered one of the most impressive Roman monuments in Africa and is almost as large as the Colosseum in Rome. With room for about 35,000 spectators, it is one of the largest amphitheatres in the world. Built around 238 A.D., it was added to the World Heritage List in 2010.
