# UNG519-20 - 2010 UN Geneva One Planet, One Ocean
All of the world’s oceans are connected. There are four major oceans – the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific. A fifth ocean is sometimes referenced, usually called the Southern, or Antarctic Ocean.
Oceans cover over 70% of the Earth’s surface, and have an average depth of more than 12,000 feet. The deepest-known part of the ocean is in the Mariana Trench in the Pacific. Called the “Challenger Deep,” its depth has been measured as approximately 36,000 feet.
