# UNG496-99 - 2009 UN Geneva Endangered Species
The United Nations issued its seventeenth set of the United Nations Endangered Species series featuring 12 species of insects. The Geneva stamps picture the Large blue butterfly (Maculinea arion), Fen raft spider (Dolomedes plantarius), Cerambyx longicorn beetle (Cerambyx cerdo), and Southern damselfly (Coenagrion mercuriale).
The Endangered Species stamps call attention to species on the verge of extinction. Each year a new species group has been featured since the program began in 1993. This was the first U.N. set designed by natural artist Roger Kent of Great Britain.
