# UNG400-01 - 2002 World Heritage Italy
The wealth and diversity of Earth’s cultural and natural heritage is celebrated on the U.N. World Heritage stamps. In 1978, Italy ratified the World Heritage Convention adopted by UNESCO in 1972. As of December 2001, 35 sites in Italy had been included on the World Heritage List. Six of these are on the 2002 World Heritage/Italy issues.
The Piazza del Duomo on the F.s.0,90 stamp is the site of a medieval cathedral and its bell tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Erection of the tower was begun in 1173 and lasted about two hundred years. It was designed as a vertical structure, but started to incline during construction.
