2000 55th Anniversary
These stamps are based on photographs taken during construction of the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Each souvenir sheet shows a photograph taken in October of 1949 of workers cheering the UN flag as it was unfurled atop the framework of the Secretariat Building. Completed in 1952, by 1956, the General Assembly Building needed renovating to accommodate new members.
The F.s. 0,90 stamp scene was from the cornerstone dedication ceremony October 24, 1949. The first Secretary-General, Trygve Lie, placed the cornerstone. The September 1951 photo used on the F.s. 1,40 stamp shows a window cleaner outside the Secretariat building. The background is the General Assembly Hall under construction.
