Transportation is an extremely important aspect of modern life. International standards, the harmonzing of national regulations, making border crossings less complicated, and coordinating the development of road, rail, and inland waterway systems are important activities wherever people move goods or travel for business or pleasure.
Through its regional commissions, the U.N. plays a significant role in the development of international agreements governing transportation both inland and across frontiers.
This year two regional commissions, the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), celebrated their 50th anniversaries. The Transportation stamps were issued to commemorate these anniversaries. Each se-tenant strip portrays vaious modes of transportation throughout the ages.
