The founding of the United Nations after World War II spurred new hope for mankind. Never before had such an organization existed – the potential was enormous. And although the U.N. has prevented many confrontations since that time, between the years of 1945 and 1992, 149 wars were waged.
Unfortunately, it is children who are most often exposed to the harsh realities of war. In some areas, entire generations of children have grown up in the midst of brutal armed conflict, with permanent negative effects.
Fortunately, the world community is now in a better position than ever to protect children from such horrors. In 1989, the Convention on the Rights of the Child defined standards for the survival, protection, and development of children in times of war and in peace.
