In 1989, the United Nations designated the 1990s as the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. These commemoratives honor the World Conference held in Yokohama, Japan, in May 1994. The Conference marked the halfway point of the decade and convened to assess what had been accomplished and what was left to be done. Experts continue to seek ways to accurately predict natural calamities. Hopefully, early warnings will reduce the human and material losses associated with natural disasters. The se-tenants designed by Kenji Koga of Japan summarize, in three languages, the three goals established for the decade: warning, assessment, and preparedness.
