The eleventh addition to the World Heritage Series showcased six ancient and historic sites in Egypt whose existence is threatened. Most of these were put on the World Heritage List in 1979.
The famous Great Sphinx of Giza is pictured on the 37¢ stamp. With the face of a man and the body of a lion, the limestone statue is the largest single-stone statue in the world. It is the oldest and last remaining of the Seven Wonders of the World.
