2005 marked the 60th anniversary of the founding of the UN.  On October 24, 1945, the Charter of the UN had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, and a majority of the original 51 member nations.

As of 2005, there were 191 countries belonging to the United Nations.  All member states are represented in the General Assembly.  Each has one vote.

The Assembly has a general debate, usually in September of each year.  At this time, member nations state their views on pressing international concerns.  The Assembly’s resolutions are an important reflection of world opinion.
