2001 World Flag Series
In 1980, the U.N. began its World Flag Series of member countries. Eight more flag stamps were added in 2001, in two blocks of four, bringing the total number of the series to 192. The flags of Slovenia, Palau, Tonga, and Croatia appear on one block, and the flags of Macedonia, Kiribati, Andorra, and Nauru appear on the other. The flags shown on these 34¢ stamps for the New York headquarters of the U.N. are the same as those that fly outside the organization’s building in New York City.
The World Flag Series was started in 1980 to honor each Member State of the U.N. By 1989, all countries who were U.N. members at the time had been commemorated, and the series was suspended temporarily. Additional World Flag Series stamps have been issued since 1997 to accommodate new admissions to the U.N., bringing the total number of this series to 192 to date.
