2000 Endangered Species
The eighth installment of the Endangered Species series, which began in 1993, was issued April 6, 2000. These 12 stamps feature an international array of flora and fauna whose existence is threatened.
Depicted on the 33¢ stamps are the brown bear, black-bellied bustard, Chinese crocodile lizard, and bonobo. The bonobo, commonly known as the pygmy or dwarf chimpanzee, is in serious danger of extinction. These animals live only in a small area of rain forest in Congo. Weighing about 100 pounds, bonobos are graceful acrobats who jump, dive, and hang from branches.
