1999 In Memoriam
A set of three commemoratives and three souvenir sheets was issued September 21, 1999, in honor of the brave men and women who have lost their lives while serving the United Nations.
Over 1,580 U.N. military and civilian peace keepers have died while serving under the U.N. flag of peace. In July of 1997, the U.N. Security Council established the Dag Hammarsköld Medal as a tribute to the sacrifice of those who had lost their lives during peace-keeping operations under the control of the U.N. Hammarsköld, the second U.N. Secretary-General, lost his life in a plane crash in 1961, while on a U.N. mission to end fighting in the Congo. The first Dag Hammarskjöld Medal was presented to his family.
