1997 World Flag Series
UN Offices in New York

World Flag Series: The United Nations issued the first 16-stamp edition of its popular “Flag Series” on September 26, 1980. In September 1989 the series was temporarily concluded, as all 159 United Nations Member States’ flags had been honored with a stamp.

However, since that time the number of Member States has grown to a total of 185 countries. These eight stamps make up the eleventh installment of this popular series.

Every day uniformed security officers ceremonially raise the flag of each member nation in front of U.N. Headquarters in New York. It takes the officers about 30 minutes to raise the 185 flags. This stunning display of nearly every nation’s flag is a powerful symbol of solidarity, and of mankind’s search for peace in a troubled world.
These stamps of the flag series are true reproductions of the flags, with accurate colors and proportions.
