1996 50th Anniversary of UNICEF
UN Offices in New York

The United Nations General Assembly created UNICEF on December 1, 1946. This tiny operation helped children affected by the devastation caused by World War II, mainly by supplying dried milk. From this humble start, UNICEF has grown to become the world’s leading advocate for children.

Walt Disney Co. artists created the artwork for this year’s UNICEF stamps, each of which features a well-known children’s story.

“Yeh-Shen” (32¢) is a Chinese story with many similarities to “Cinderella,” including a mean stepmother, magical animals, and a lost shoe – which a king finds, and uses to locate Yeh-Shen. The two fall in love and are married.

“The Ugly Ducking” (60¢) is the story of a swan chick raised in a family of ducks. Because of its differences, the swan is perceived as ugly. But, when it grows up, everyone is amazed at its beauty.
