With the issue of these six “Youth: Our Future” stamps, designed by Gottfried Kumpf of Austria, the U.N. celebrated another important anniversary in 1995 – the 10th anniversary of the International Youth Year. The U.N. decided that 1985 would be designated the International Youth Year back in 1973. This long-range planning shows the U.N.’s dedication to the world’s youth population.
In 1995, the U.N. initiated preparation of a world youth program, aimed at addressing the problems youth will face in the year 2000 and beyond. This program will provide a practical guide, and global framework, for national and regional actions on a long-term basis. Youth issues were also addressed at the Social Summit.
