# UN322-23 - 1980 United Nations 35th Anniversary
On June 26, 1980, the U.N. had been in existence for 35 years. While not always successful, the U.N. had many accomplishments to show for its 35 years. In 1949, Israel and the Arab states signed cease-fire agreements worked out by U.N. officials. In 1954, the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1956, the U.N. arranged an Israel-Egypt cease-fire agreement in the Suez Canal dispute. And in 1968, the General Assembly endorsed a treaty designed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. These are just a few of the many things accomplished by the U.N.
