Mahatma Gandhi is a historical figure known worldwide for his peaceful protests and actions to end injustice.  He also successfully led the campaign that finally earned India its independence from British rule.  Born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, 1869, he was first addressed by the title Mahātmā ("high-souled" or "venerable") in 1914 while in South Africa.  In 2019, the United Nations issued a new definitive stamp featuring a Gandhi quote and portrait in honor of his 150th birthday.  The quote reads "The earth, the air, the land and the water are not an inheritance from our forefathers but on loan from our children."
