# UN1093-94 - 2014 49c & $1.15 International Year of Family Farming
International Year of Family Farming
In 2014, the United Nations declared the International Year of Family Farming to raise awareness to the estimated 500 million family farms throughout the world. Most family farms consist of less than five acres of land. For many families, their farm produces all the food for the family, and those with productive soil can produce extra to sell.
After the year was over, the UN decided to endorse a Decade of Family Farming to further the awareness and programs begun in 2014. The decade was launched in May 2019. Some of its goals are to reduce poverty and improve food security. This will be done through education and providing nutritious crops that are appropriate for each family’s climate. A productive family farm can lift a family out of poverty and provide meaningful work for each member.
