2014 Flag Series
New York Office

The 2014 Flag Series stamps feature flags of four United Nations member-states.  The flags included are Afghanistan (admitted to the United Nations on November 19, 1946), Cambodia (admitted on December 14, 1955), Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire, admitted September 20, 1960), and Serbia. (Serbia was an original member of the United Nations in 1945 as part of The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until its dissolution in 1992.  It was again admitted in 2000, then as part of The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.  Its name was changed to Serbia and Montenegro in 2003.  Following Montenegro’s declaration of independence, the Republic of Serbia continued its individual membership in 2006.)

The flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was officially adopted in February 2006.  A new constitution in 2005 encouraged a return to a modified design of a prior flag.  The sky-blue background, representing peace, is the only significant difference between the new design and the design from 1963 to 1971, which had a royal- blue field.  The other colors represent blood of the country’s martyrs (red) and the country’s wealth (yellow).  The star in the upper-left canton stands for the country’s radiant future.
