The 2012 United Nations World Heritage stamps pay tribute to some of Africa’s finest sites.
The two New York stamps picture the Kilimanjaro National Park and the town of Djenné. Kilimanjaro National Park was established in 1973. The park’s namesake, Mount Kilimanjaro, is the highest point in Africa and is also one of the largest volcanoes in the world. Several endangered species also live in the park, which was made a World Heritage Site in 1987.
Added to the World Heritage List in 1988, Djenné is the chief town of the Djenné Circle. Inhabited since 250 B.C., the town is recognized for its remarkable use of earth in architecture.
