According to the United Nations, “Our cultural heritage and our natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration... World Heritage sites belong to all the people of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located.” The focus of the 2011 World Heritage stamps are Nordic Countries.
The sites honored are Drottningholm Castle, Sweden; Surtsey Volcanic Island, Iceland; Suomenlinna Fortress, Finland; Kronborg Castle, Denmark; Urnes Stave Church, Norway; and the Struve Geodetic Arc. The Struve Geodetic Arc is a chain of survey triangulations spanning 10 countries from Hammerfest, Norway, to the Black Sea, a distance of over 1,750 miles.
