The U.N. issued this set of stamps to commemorate 2010 as the “International Year of Biodiversity.” The stamps were designed to raise awareness of the vital role biodiversity (wide variety of life forms) plays in complex environments around the world. The New York stamps feature a hummingbird and liverwort plant (a type of moss).
The stamp images were selected from a series of illustrated books called Art Forms from Nature, published by German biologist Ernst Heinrich Haeckel from 1899-1904.
