Own Limited-Edition Columbia STS-87 Launch and Return Silk Covers

Produced by Colorano, this set of two covers honors the launch and return of the Space Shuttle Columbia’s 24th mission, STS-87 (the 88th mission of the Space Shuttle program).

These popular Colorano covers feature “silk” cachets that are produced through a special screening process and then bonded to the envelope.  Each cachet pictures a photo from the mission and is surrounded by a golden border.  The covers bear patriotic US stamps and cancellations relating to events from the mission.  You can discover the story behind each one with the informative captions next to the cachets.

Launched on November 19, 1997, STS-79 lasted over 15 days, returning December 5.  During that time, astronauts conducted experiments with microgravity, conducted two spacewalks, and deployed the SPARTAN-201 solar physics spacecraft.  This mission marked the first time a Japanese astronaut participated in an Extravehicular Activity (spacewalk).
