Own Limited-Edition Atlantis STS-86 Silk Covers

Produced by Colorano, this set of two covers honors the launch and return of the Space Shuttle Atlantis’ 20th mission, STS-86 (the 87th mission of the Space Shuttle program). 

These popular Colorano covers feature “silk” cachets that are produced through a special screening process and then bonded to the envelope.  The cachets picture a pre-flight and in-flight photo from the mission and is surrounded by a golden border.  The covers bear patriotic US stamps and cancellations highlighting the dates of the launch and return of the mission.  You can discover the story behind each one with the informative captions next to the cachets.

Launched on September 26, 1997, STS-79 was the seventh docking mission with the Mir Space Station.  The mission included the transfer or American astronauts, including the return of Colin Foale, who’d spent 145 days in space (the second longest space flight after Shannon Lucid).  Also of note during this mission was the first joint US-Russian extravehicular activity, a five-hour space walk on October 1.
