Standing Liberty Quarters
The Standing Liberty Quarter coins were produced from 1916-30. They were made with 90% silver and symbolized America's stand in World War I. Both sides of the coins picture artwork by sculptor Hermon MacNeil. The "heads" side features the goddess Liberty facing east, toward Europe where World War I was raging. her shield faces the same direction. Liberty holds an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in her other hand. She is walking through a gate inscribed with the words "In God We Trust." The Standing Liberty Quarter coins were struck mostly at the Philadelphia Mint, with fewer produced at the Denver and San Francisco Mints. No Quarters were made in 1922. After a while, the dates on the coins began to wear off, so the date was recessed on all Standing Liberty Quarters beginning in 1925. The last Standing Liberty Quarter was struck in 1930. It was replaced by the George Washington Quarter the following year.
