Why the stamp was issued: This stamp is part of the love series and was issued in time for Valentine’s Day cards.
About the stamp design: This stamp pictures Untitled, a drawing by graphic artist Keith Haring. It shows two figures reaching toward love, represented by a heart. The movement lines around the figures suggests they are dancing for joy. USPS art director, Antonio Alcala, selected the artwork. It represents the universality of love between family, friends, and romantic partners.
First Day City: The stamp was dedicated in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, the hometown of the artist, Keith Haring. His sister, Karen DeLong took part in the First Day of Issue ceremony.
About the Love series: Based on the popularity of Christmas stamps, the USPS issued its first Love stamp in 1973. It wasn’t intended to be the start of a series, and, in fact, it wasn’t until 1982 that another Love stamp was issued. Love-themed stamps were issued sporadically over the next few years. The USPS stated that they weren’t intended just for Valentine’s Day mail, but also for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions.
In 1987, the USPS officially declared it a series, and new Love stamps have been issued nearly every year since. Love stamps are on sale longer than most commemorative stamps and are usually printed in greater quantities. Occasionally, they have gone back to press for additional printings if demand is sufficient.
History the stamp represents: In 2025, the United States Postal Service issued a Love stamp featuring the artwork of the legendary Keith Haring. Known for his bold, energetic style, Haring’s art captured the spirit of the 1980s, with vibrant colors and simple yet powerful imagery.
Starting with chalk drawings on empty advertising panels in New York’s subway system, Haring’s work quickly gained public attention. His artwork, often grounded in the streets and urban landscapes, reflects his deep commitment to making art accessible to all. Through his vibrant designs, Haring spoke out about love, peace, and the need for social justice.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Haring was deeply committed to activism, using his art to raise awareness of AIDS, apartheid, and the plight of the marginalized. His foundation, established in 1989, continues his mission to support organizations that focus on children’s rights, HIV/AIDS prevention, and arts education.
The 2025 Love stamp not only celebrates Haring’s lasting legacy, but serves as a reminder of Haring’s vision: that love can break down walls, inspire change, and bring people together across all divides. It is a fusion of art and emotion, a perfect way to send heartfelt messages to loved ones. As the world continues to change, Haring’s timeless message remains as relevant as ever: Love is a force that unites us all.
