In 1993, the United States and Monaco issued joint-issue stamps commemorating Grace Kelly. The First Day Cover features US #2749 and Monaco #1851, with postmarks from both the United States and Monaco. A photo of Kelly taken during the making of the movie Rear Window was the basis for the stamps. Polish-born stamp engraver Czeslaw Slania engraved both the US and Monaco stamps. Blue was chosen as the color for the stamp because it was Princess Grace’s favorite color.
Grace Kelly began her Hollywood career in 1952. She starred in films such as Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and High Society. She went on to win one Academy Award and two Golden Globes.
In April 1955, Kelly led the US delegation at the Cannes Film Festival, where she met Prince Rainier III of Monaco. The pair remained in touch after Kelly returned to the US. That December, Rainier toured America, visited Kelly, and met her family. He proposed after just three days and the two families immediately began preparations for what the press dubbed “The Wedding of the Century.” Two separate ceremonies, civil and religious, were held. The one held at Saint Nicholas Cathedral was watched by an estimated 30 million television viewers.
Though no longer involved in acting, Kelly remained active in her duties as princess, a mother, and a philanthropist. Princess Grace is remembered for her elegance, charm, and generosity.
