This is your chance to get a jumpstart on a new collection – Seldom seen Wine Revenue Stamps. In 2006, the Smithsonian National Postal Museum sold surplus Revenue stamps in a controversial move. Museums seldom ‘deaccession’ their collection, but this sale was an exception. Many stamp collectors cheered for being able to add rare and usual stamps to their collection. And the stamps were in exceptionally fresh condition.
Illegal to own in 1941
Wine stamps were proof that the appropriate taxes had been paid on wine. The government strictly controlled the stamps to stop fraud and tax evasion. The stamps were affixed to the bottle, case, and even rail tanker, so mint stamps were very rare. We were delighted to buy these mint stamps in 2006 to offer to stamp collectors.
There are two stamp designs, both with vines and grapes surrounding the tax price. Stamps with values of $1 and higher are engraved and large. Those with values under $1 are smaller and printed by offset lithography. These stamps are mint fresh, never hinged, and ungummed as issued.
Here are the 59 stamps you will receive:
RE108, RE109, RE110, RE111, RE112, RE113, RE115, RE116, RE117, RE118, RE119, RE120, RE121, RE122, RE123, RE124, RE125, RE126, RE127, RE128, RE130, RE131, RE133, RE135, RE136, RE137, RE138, RE139, RE140, RE141, RE144, RE145, RE146, RE147, RE149, RE151, RE152, RE153, RE154, RE160, RE173, RE174, RE180, RE181, RE183, RE184, RE185, RE186, RE188, RE190 RE191, RE192 RE193, RE195, RE196, RE199, RE200, RE201, and RE203
