Here's Some of the History These Stamps Capture:

Four 1941 Big Plane stamps picture an aircraft that never existed – if it did, the bottom of the tail would be torn off as it took off.  Design based on the DC-3, Lockheed Electra, and Beech 18.

Up until 1925, the government flew the mail.  Then, private companies were contracted and the 15¢ and 20¢ Biplane Map stamps were issued for that service.  Ford was the first contractor that flew mail.

The 1952 80¢ Hawaii Fountainhead stamp paid the rate to ship an orchid from Hawaii to the United States.

The 1948 5¢ airplane shows DC-4 Sky Master, which played a critical role in the Allied war effort and the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49.  It was the first Airmail coil stamp.
