What were Bedding Stamps used for?
Congress enacted the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914, outlawing practices that hurt American consumers. One area that was affected by this act was manufacturers of bedding materials. They now had to list all materials contained in their mattresses and whether they were new or used. This was in response to companies using unsafe materials such as old rags, food waste, and unwashed bedding from hospitals. These materials attracted pests and may have spread communicable diseases.
The bedding materials were listed on a tag. We're all familiar with these mattress tags, though they are officially called "law tags." States soon issued Bedding Inspection stamps to be affixed to the law tag. This gave states additional revenue to enforce the guidelines. Nineteen states produced these stamps over the course of eight decades. Connecticut used them for only three years (1937-1940), New York had Bedding stamps for nine years (1933-42), and Maryland used them for about three decades (approximately 1923-53).
These stamps are a neat way to expand your collection or begin a new mini-collection. Order yours today.
